SALARIES OF DOCTORS

Salaries of doctors are increasing in ALL countries of the EU.

  • However, not always in real terms and not equally among countries.

  • The important question when we look at the development of doctors’ salaries is, if the salaries are increasing just in nominal terms or in real terms as well. More meaningful insights give us changes in real term as these also take inflation into account.

  • According to figures released by the OECD, in most European countries, salaries of doctors in real terms salaries indeed increased between 2010 and 2020. Salaries of specialist increased usually faster than those of GPs resulting in growing gap between these two categories of doctors.

  • Some people might find it surprising that salaries of GPs and specialists increased in Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic at the most. The highest rise there was in Hungary where salaries of specialists increased by 6.4% (in real terms) over the last 10 years and salaries of GPs by 4.8%. Similarly, also doctors in Slovakia, and Czechia recorded rise over 4%. On the other end of the spectrum are Portugal and Slovenia and partially also Belgium, the UK and the Netherlands. All of these countries saw salaries increase in nominal terms, but not in real terms.
