DIGI4CARE PEER REVIEW VISITS: SHARING DIGITAL HEALTH EXPERIENCE ACROSS EUROPE
Throughout the DIGI4Care project, Peer Review Visits provided partners with an opportunity to see digital healthcare solutions being tested in practice, exchange experience across countries and discuss their potential for wider implementation.
CEE HPN participated in four Peer Review Visits in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania and Bosnia and Herzegovina, covering digital solutions ranging from dementia and long-term care to AI-assisted diabetic retinopathy screening and telemedicine.
Czech Republic – Digital Solutions for Dementia Care
The first Peer Review Visit took place on 23–24 April 2025 in Jihlava and Jindřichův Hradec, organised by the Faculty of Management of the Prague University of Economics and Business.
The visit focused on technologies supporting people with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive disorders, including ProxyQB, the Robin robot and remote monitoring solutions.
Participants visited three long-term care facilities in the Vysočina Region, where they observed how these technologies were being tested in everyday care to support patients and improve their quality of life.
Hungary – AI Screening and Point-of-Care Ultrasound
The Peer Review Visit in Budapest and the Lake Balaton area focused on two digital healthcare solutions: AI-assisted diabetic retinopathy screening in primary care and tele-education and remote demonstration of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS).
Participants visited the Hungarian National Ambulance Service, the Department of Ophthalmology at Semmelweis University and a mobile screening centre near Lake Balaton.
The visit demonstrated how digital technologies can bring diagnostic services closer to patients and support healthcare professionals outside traditional specialist settings.
Bosnia and Herzegovina – Digital Solutions for Dementia and Cognitive Care
The final Peer Review Visit took place in Banja Luka as part of DIGI4Care Pilot 4, focused on digital solutions for dementia and cognitive disorders.
The visit brought together partners from several participating countries for expert discussions, site visits and collaborative workshops. The programme provided an opportunity to exchange experience with digitally supported approaches to dementia and long-term care and to discuss how solutions tested in different countries could contribute to more person-centred and sustainable models of care.
Romania – Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Closer to Patients
During the Peer Review Visit in Oradea, participants observed diabetic retinopathy screening using a fundus camera in a nearby village.
The activity demonstrated how screening delivered closer to patients can improve access to eye examinations in rural areas, support earlier identification of potential complications and ensure timely referral to an ophthalmologist.
Turning Pilot Experience into Shared Knowledge
The Peer Review Visits were an important part of the DIGI4Care project, allowing partners to observe digital innovations in real-life settings and exchange practical experience across different healthcare systems.
From AI-supported diabetic retinopathy screening and POCUS to remote monitoring and digital solutions for dementia care, the visits strengthened cross-country cooperation and helped transform individual pilot experiences into shared knowledge for the wider adoption of digital health solutions across the Danube Region.
